Jose Mourinho insists Tottenham will not be “in the same league” as their Premier League rivals in the summer transfer market, via the BBC.
Although Tottenham spent more than £100m last year, Mourinho accepts that his budget has been severely slashed.
Last month, the Portuguese admitted Spurs will not be spending “rivers of money” like they have done previously.
Speaking to a virtual news conference via Zoom, ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester United, Mourinho said “you have now examples already of clubs investing and making important movements in the market and we are still nine matches away from the end of the season.
“We know that we are not going to be in the same league, in the same world, as clubs that are going to do completely different to us.”
This follows the news that another of his old clubs Chelsea have confirmed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner on a five-year-deal.
While the Blues and the Red Devils have been to able to fork out huge sums on some of the world’s biggest stars, Mourinho knows the strict boundaries he has to work within.
Indeed, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has had to borrow £175m to cover the costs of the pandemic. The Athletic revealed the Lilywhites are worried they may lose more than £200m as a result of the nationwide lockdown.
While clubs all over the country have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis, Spurs have seemingly been hit harder than most, as Levy has made it clear Mourinho will have to offload players and focus on signing free agents (Daily Express).
However, fans will no doubt be concerned by the fact they may fall even further behind their closest rivals, who can do ‘whatever they want’ in the summer.
According to a recent study by the University of Liverpool, Tottenham have overtaken Manchester City as the Premier League’s most valuable club.
Nevertheless, Mourinho’s comments do not bode well, especially as he is desperate to strengthen his squad before the start of next season.
