For a man who has been in the PFA Team of the Year multiple times since joining Manchester United, David de Gea’s performances last season certainly dropped from his usual standards. The Spain international made four errors that directly led to goals, whilst this campaign has also seen him make a couple of howlers – he failed to keep out Patrick van Aanholt’s near-post finish against Crystal Palace, and dropped a monumental clanger away at Watford too.But against Manchester City on Wednesday night, the goalkeeper was in inspired form. As per Sofascore, De Gea made four saves in total, with his first-half stop from Sergio Aguero’s diving header particularly impressive.

And after seeing his performance, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the 29-year-old.
Some fans insisted De Gea showed signs of getting back to his best, with one supporter in particular claiming the Spaniard proved he is still the number one goalkeeper in the world.
One fan meanwhile hailed De Gea’s “authority” in coming for crosses in particular, saying that particular aspect of the goalkeeper’s game looked far improved.
With Dean Henderson set to return from a yet another season-long loan at Sheffield United at the end of the campaign, the competition for the number one spot at Old Trafford is only set to intensify.
Separating the fairweathers from real fans: How much can you remember about United’s treble season?
De Gea already has Sergio Romero keeping him on his toes, so the return of Henderson simply increases the pressure on the Spaniard to get back to his absolute best. And against City, he was fantastic, and his trademark reflex saves were on full view. The United number one appears intent on keeping his place in between the sticks for the club.
Meanwhile, Manchester United fans are fuming over this major update on this loanee’s future.
